The Massachusetts Lottery is also home to the “Pieces of Eight” game, which was created by Benjamin Franklin and raised money for the cannons needed to defend Philadelphia. Another game is “Expedition against Canada,” which was drawn in 1758.
Various states have used lottery funds to fund fortifications, roads, libraries, and other public projects. Some states have also endorsed lottery games, though most governments outlaw them. In some countries, such as France, lotteries were banned for two centuries.
In the United States, the Texas Lottery is the third largest lottery, with nearly $8 billion in prize money distributed in the fiscal year of 2022. Over the last 30 years, it has contributed more than $35 billion to public education in the state. In addition, the state’s Foundation School Fund received more than $1 billion from the lottery.
The New Hampshire Lottery has been in operation for more than half a century. It has drawn more than a billion dollars in jackpots and has a variety of local games. A player can play the Mega Millions, Powerball, or other multi-state draw games.
New Mexico Lottery has a variety of instant-win scratch card games. Two of these are drawn in the state and three are available nationwide. Each ticket costs only a dollar and is a chance to win a large prize. Many players prefer the smaller jackpots, however, which offer better odds of winning.
